What are they?   Why Incentives Programs work?   What do they do?

Humans are funny animals. pay them their salary and they'll usually do their job. After all, they're getting paid to perform a task. In the past decade or so, employee loyalty has dropped dramatically, and people tend to focus less on spending every spare minute at work and more on other aspects of their life, However, when incentive are brought into the picture, an interest in one's job can be revived dramatically. Offer an employee something that seems special to them, something they might not buy for themselves but would love to have, and watch them come alive.

While incentive are certainly no cure-all, and work best when implemented as part of an over-all strategy combining training, hiring, communications, research and other key areas, they provide
a sure-fire way to rouse the troops and get them to hit specific business targets.

Incentives work because people want them.
They want and need to be informed of what is expected of them, why it is important and how they can meet expectations. They also like to know when they are doing a good job. By providing real tangible awards for quality and performance that fits in with the company's long and short term goals, Incentives accomplish all of this. They also help satisfy that inner need we all have to feel important and be recognized for our accomplishments, whether it's selling a million dollars in real estate in one month or making paper grocery sacks faster than anyone else on your shift.
Incentives provide the psychological push necessary to create a desired action. Without them, a sales force or group of workers can usually be counted on to perform at a pretty average level. With worthwhile incentive, however, the sky is the limit. Properly-designed incentive programs can address almost any business challenge:

Improving Sales
Raising Productivity
Increasing market share
Reducing turnover
Boosting quality
Instilling loyalty
Lifting morale
Fostering team work
Improving work habits
Ensuring safety
Decreasing absenteeism
Reducing costs

Incentive Programs define the performance level desired in a prescribed period of time. By announcing the goal and time frame, a friendly competition between participants is begun. When encouraged and properly promoted, enthusiasm and peer pressure increase the likelihood that all participants, not just the top producers, will respond.
